“How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?”

Answer: “It depends on how badly the light bulb wants to change.”

This old joke lets psychologists off the hook, and I have a problem with that. I believe that clients come in because they want to change, and it’s my job to help them get the results they want or tell them that I can’t.

If you’re looking for someone just to sit, nod, listen, and say, “I see how you could feel that way” for months on end,  I’m probably not for you.

If you want to dive in and figure out where you really want to go and how to actually get there, then I’m your guy. I will meet you where you are, call it like I see it, and do everything I can to help you reach your goals.

I offer psychotherapy in person or by telehealth from my office in Durham, NC.

I also offer executive coaching and management consulting for business leaders, executives, entrepreneurs, doctors, and corporations.

Why work with me?

You may be someone used to figuring things out on your own, but you’ve run out of ideas or want a fresh perspective.

Maybe you have sought help before but were frustrated by the pace of your previous therapy.

Perhaps life has thrown you a curveball, and it’s time to make some changes.

Either way, you want solutions, not just support and encouragement.

When you work with me, you get a seasoned, licensed psychologist and someone with years of experience in business and industry.

I hold a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Florida (doctoral internship at UC San Diego), an M.A. and Ed.M. in Counseling from Columbia University, an M.B.A. in Finance from New York University, and a B.A. in Economics from Lafayette college. I’ve worked in industry, advised business leaders, ran two investment management firms and an MBA career center.

As a psychologist, I work with adults, couples, and older teens.

I’m classically trained in psychodynamic, object relations, and attachment psychology. In other words, I help people understand the life experiences and patterns that influence their behavior and use that insight to drive change. I am also a humanistic and existential psychologist, which means I help clients discover what they really want in life and how to get it.

I am licensed in North Carolina and practice psychology at Dr. Jeff Fischer, Psychologist PLLC in Durham, NC.

As an executive coach, I work with business leaders, entrepreneurs,  professionals, and organizations. I also help people navigate career transition.

I’ve spent over 25 years working at the intersection of psychology and commerce. I have held coaching, consulting, and line positions in industry, and advised business leaders in top organizations (e.g., McKinsey, Goldman Sachs). I was also the COO of a $2.5B investment firm, and I have done deals, managed risk, and deployed capital.

I offer executive coaching and consulting services nationally through my consulting firm, Jeffrey M. Fischer Ph.D. LLC.
